The History of Slyflite Powered Parachutes

My name is Sly. Slyflite is my registered trade name. I am one of america’s first Powered Parachute instructors. It all started with the invention of the PPC.

While driving home from work one evening in late 1983, I noticed three parachutes in the sky. They were miles away. But I noticed they were not decending. In fact, they seemed to be climbing. Confused by this I figured I would check it out. A friend told me about an ulrtalight airfield in that area. I figured that would be a good place to start since i was already an ultralight pilot.Once at the airfield located at that time in king george Va. I met Bob combs. He had resently purchased a Paraplane dealership. He operated under the name of Alantic Ultralights. Bob introduced me to the paraplane. It was love at first sight. No one knew much about PPC’s at that time. Bob was impressed with my knowledge of ultralights and small engines. I started working with him right away. just as quickly I flew the paraplane and purchased it as soon as I landed.  I started instructing for Bob’s operation as well as doing the repairs and maintenance. During the late 80’s we moved the operation to an area in King George co. along the Potomac river. There I found a love for flying over water. By then Bob and I were partners. Bob passed in the mid 90’s. At that point I had a decision to make. I decided to continue the PPC business. over the years I have flown just about every PPC on the market, And quite a few home brews. I have trained hundreds of students and flown 1000’s of hrs. I have been on the front page of news papers, flown many news worthy events, and even a few famous people. In all my years of flying, I have never had an injury or caused serious damage to a PPC. Flying is dangerous. But keeping your equipment in good condition is the key to safe flight. Always remember,  the Pilot is the weakest link.     I love this sport. I’ll probably fly powered Parachutes as long as my health allows. PPC’s have enriched my life greatly. Thanks to the late Bob Combs. My Associate, My friend.
